Biography

Dr Andrea Tosato is an Associate Professor in Commercial Law at the School of Law of the University of Nottingham and a Visiting Associate Professor at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He read Law at the University of Pavia (Italy) before pursuing graduate studies at the University of Cambridge, receiving his LLM in 2008. He subsequently returned to the University of Pavia, and obtained his PhD in 2010. Prior to joining the University of Nottingham, he held academic posts at the University of Pavia and the University of Florence; he has also held visiting positions at King's College London, the University of Chicago and the University of Pennsylvania.

Since 2008, Dr Tosato has served as one of Italy's three delegates to the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) Working Group VI (Security Interests), representing the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the negotiations for the UNCITRAL Legislative Guide on Secured Transactions: Supplement on Security Rights in Intellectual Property (2010), the Model Law on Secured Transactions (2016), the Guide to Enactment (2017) and the Practice Guide (2019).

Dr Tosato is engaged in several international legislative reform projects dealing with the impact of blockchain and other distributed ledger technologies on commercial law. In the USA, he is actively involved in the ULC/ALI Uniform Commercial Code and Emerging Technologies Committee that is currently drafting amendments to the Uniform Commercial Code to accommodate emerging technology developments. At Unidroit, he is a member of the Unidroit Working Group developing a Model Law on Warehouse Receipts (UNIDROIT - Model Law on Warehouse Receipts) and serves as on observer on behalf of the ULC in the Unidroit Working Group on Digital Assets and Private Law (Digital Assets and Private Law - UNIDROIT).

Dr Tosato's research has been published in leading law journals, including the Oxford Journal of Legal Studies, Law & Contemporary Problems, the Hastings Law Journal, the European Law Journal, and the Lloyd's Maritime and Commercial Law Quarterly.
