About the Collections

The D H Lawrence Collections at The University of Nottingham Library form one of the major international research resources for the study of D H Lawrence. The holdings have grown steadily over the years following the initiative in the 1950s of Professor Vivian de Sola Pinto, Professor of English at the University, with the support of Professor J D Chambers, the brother of Jessie Wood (née Chambers) and the University Librarian, R S Smith.

The Lawrence Collections now include both published and manuscript material, much of it obtained in the face of fierce competition from overseas universities and other collectors. Recently the collections have been greatly enhanced as a result of the bequest of the extensive private collection of George Lazarus (La Z) as well as the purchase of periodical and ephemeral material from the collection of W. (Bob) Forster (For).

In addition, there are a number of other collections closely relating to Lawrence and his work, notably the papers of Catherine Carswell (CC), Enid Hilton (Hil), Paul Bernard (Be) and Peter Evershed (Ed).

The cataloguing of printed and original material in the collections was enabled by funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Arts Council England.

A selection of images from the D.H. Lawrence collections including photographs of Lawrence and his contemporaries, images of his literary manuscripts and publications, and artworks, are available in a Digital Gallery.
