Name Indexing and Transcriptions

Many documents in Manuscripts and Special Collections contain valuable information about people and families in Nottinghamshire. For many years, our dedicated volunteers have been indexing and transcribing the details from some of these sources. This is an ongoing project and the indices will be updated as more transcriptions are completed.

Although the indices do not contain images of the records, in most cases the original documents are available to consult in the Reading Room. We operate a reprographics service and copies can be made subject to the condition of the document. Please contact us for more information.

Archdeaconry Court Records

There are many different documents created and kept by the Archdeaconry Court, of which we have name-indexed the Marriage Bonds and Presentment Bills, and some Penances.

Marriage bonds were issued to couples applying to marry by licence. The fully-searchable database spans 1771-1884, with a ten year gap from 1790. Please click on 'more search options' in the search form to enable searching of brides' maiden or widowed names.

Churchwarden's presentment bills are reports from parishes naming people brought before the ecclesiastical court, for offences of a religious or moral nature (not criminal). This index contains approximately 30,000 entries spanning 1587 to 1756.

For more information about the Archdeaconry Court, please see our guide to the collection.

Nonconformist Records

We have extracts of baptism, marriage and burial registers transcribed from six nonconformist churches and available in PDF format. These records are subject to a 100-year closure period under the Data Protection Act, so the most recent entries will not be included in the index.

Please see the church’s individual pages for further details and to browse the transcriptions:

University College Nottingham Records

The University Archive contains many different types of records relating to the students and staff. These records are subject to a 75-year closure period under the Data Protection Act. For more information about the University Archive, please see our guide to the collection.

The following name indices are in PDF format.
