Biography

Gill Doody qualified in Medicine in 1987 from St Mary's Hospital Medical School, University of London, having obtained a BSc in Psychology in 1984 from University College London. She completed her basic core psychiatry training in Fife, Scotland and then undertook a neurosurgical post as a sabbatical in Newcastle. She obtained her MRCPsych in 1992, as well as an MPhil in Clinical Psychiatry from Edinburgh University. She was awarded a Wellcome Trust Clinical Training Fellowship in 1994 in the relevance of learning disability to schizophrenia. She subsequently obtained an MD with Distinction from Edinburgh University in 1998. Having completed Higher Psychiatric Training in Edinburgh in 1998 as a clinical lecturer, she moved to Nottingham University in 1999 to take up the post of Clinical Senior Lecturer in General Adult Psychiatry. In 2009, she obtained an MMedSci. in Medical Education from the University of Nottingham and was awarded FRCPsych. She was awarded a personal chair in General Adult Psychiatry and Medical Education in 2012.

She has previously held a number of educational related roles in both the Royal College of Psychiatrists, the Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME) and a number of external examinerships.

She was Director of Undergraduate Examinations and Assessment for the University of Nottingham Medical School from 2012-2015. In September 2015, she was appointed to the role of Dean of Medical Education and Deputy Head of the School of Medicine.

She is a General Medical Council Education Associate and is currently a member of an UG medicine accreditation team.

Clinically, she works for Nottingham Healthcare NHS Trust as an Honorary Consultant in General Adult Psychiatry with the Nottingham City Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Team at Highbury Hospital, Nottingham.

Current Research

Prof Doody's main area of clinical research is the epidemiology and aetiology of schizophrenia, including the role of drug misuse in the evolution of psychosis. She has an interest in empathy and theory of mind models in mental illness. She is the Nottingham site PI for the MRC funded STRATA project.

She also undertakes research in medical education focusing on teaching and learning innovations, assessment methodologies and communication skills teaching.

She currently has several PhD students and is happy to take enquiries from potential students interested in either schizophrenia research or medical education.
