Biography
Professor of Stroke Medicine at Nottingham University, and also an Honorary Consultant Physician in Stroke Medicine for Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
Prior to taking up post as Associate Professor, I undertook general medical training in Sheffield, Leicester and Nottingham, with a specialist certificate of training in Geriatrics and Stroke.
Expertise Summary
Current interests include developing treatments to improve recovery after stroke, treatment of haemorrhagic stroke, quality of life after stroke, management of blood pressure after stroke, use of hypothermia in acute ischaemic stroke, anti-platelet treatment for the secondary prevention of stroke, fatigue and rehabilitation after stroke.
Chief Investigator of TICH-2 (NIHR HTA funded) a phase III study testing tranexamic acid in intracerebral haemorrhage, and of STEMS3 (NIHR RfPB funded), a phase II study of G-CSF and physiotherapy in chronic stroke, and National coordinator of EuroHyp-1, a European, multi-centre, phase III, clinical trial of hypothermia after stroke.
I am Stroke Lead for the East Midlands CRN.
Teaching Summary
I enjoy teaching and regularly receive positive feedback from teaching delivered to medical students, post graduates, allied health professionals and stroke survivors.

Current Research
My current interests include developing treatments to improve recovery after stroke, particularly intracerebral haemorrhage, quality of life after stroke, management of blood pressure after stroke, fatigue and rehabilitation after stroke.
I am currently Chief Investigator of DASH (RfPB funded) - a feasibility study testing desmopressin in anti-platelet associated ICH. I was Chief Investigator of TICH-2 (HTA funded) a phase III study testing tranexamic acid in intracerebral haemorrhage. A follow-on study TICH-3 is planned, targeting patients most likely to benefit.
I am the Independent Chair for the ATTEST-2 study testing Tenecteplase in acute ischaemic stroke.
Past Research
I studied stroke recovery and the management of blood pressure in acute stroke as part of my Doctorate of Medicine, Clinical Studies of stroke recovery and potential enhancement with pharmacological intervention or stem cell mobilisation.
I was the Clinical Lead for Trent Stroke Research Network and East Midlands Clinical Research Network 2014-2018.
I lead STEMS3 (RfPB funded), a phase II study of G-CSF and/or physiotherapy in chronic stroke, and National coordinator of EuroHyp-1, a European, multi-centre, phase III, clinical trial of hypothermia after stroke. I am a member of the BASP scientific committee and adjudicate SAEs and outcomes in ENOS and TARDIS. I was on the DMC for the MRC funded STEMS2 study and am on the DMC for the ongoing RfPB Neurovascular Imaging in Patients with Carotid Artery Disease study and RATULS study.
Future Research
I would be interested in collaborating Nationally or Internationally on areas involving acute stroke, particularly ICH along the lines of my research interests above.
I also have an interest in pre-eclampsia as a risk factor for stroke, reducing research waste and increasing the involvement of women in research; both as participants and researchers.
