The University of Nottingham is one of the top choices for graduate recruitment among UK employers, a new report has shown.

The latest report by High Fliers Research showed that Nottingham came 2nd in their list of universities targeted by the largest number of top employers in 2014-2015.

The report is based on research conducted during December 2014 with the UK's 100 leading graduate employers including BP, EDF Energy, the Civil Service, IBM, Goldman Sachs, PwC, Google and HSBC.

Director of Careers and Employability at the University Nalayini Thambar said: “I am delighted that the employability of University of Nottingham graduates is once again recognised by the Times Top 100 graduate recruiters. This reflects the quality of our students and the way in which they make the most of the Nottingham student experience to develop their skills and talents for academic and career success. We look forward to welcoming top graduate recruiters to The University of Nottingham throughout 2015.”

Despite more than 140 universities now offering undergraduate degree courses in the UK, giving employers the widest-ever choice of higher education institutions from which to recruit graduates, the research found that for the 2014/15 recruitment period the majority of top employers have targeted between just 10 and 25 universities each.

Manchester took the top spot for graduate recruitment followed by Nottingham, Warwick, Cambridge and Oxford. The survey found that these top institutions have attracted the largest number of top graduate recruiters for campus fairs, recruitment presentations and other local university promotions.

The survey showed that the number of graduates hired by organisations in The Times Top 100 Graduate Employers rose by 7.9 per cent in 2014, the largest annual rise in graduate recruitment for four years. Leading employers plan to expand their graduate recruitment even further in 2015 with 8.1 per cent more entry-level vacancies than last year, making it the third consecutive year that graduate vacancies have increased.

This substantial increase in graduate vacancies for 2015 takes graduate recruitment beyond the pre-recession peak in the graduate job market in 2007, meaning there will be more opportunities for this summer’s university-leavers than at any other time during the past decade.

The research also sheds light on the recruitment criteria for many top organisations — nearly half of the companies surveyed said that graduates with no previous work experience at all were unlikely to be successful during the selection process and have little or no chance of receiving a job offer for their organisations’ graduate programmes.

The University of Nottingham encourages and supports students to ensure they have a full-rounded experience whilst studying, which includes participating in work placements. This includes the Nottingham Advantage Award, which enables students to take extra-curricular modules alongside their academic studies, which build skills and experience in areas such as PR, finance and career planning through activities with the University’s Careers and Employability Service, Widening Participation and the Students’ Union.

It is also one of the most popular universities in the UK among graduate employers, in the top 10 for student experience according to the Times Higher Education and winner of ‘Research Project of the Year’ at the THE Awards 2014. It is ranked in the world’s top one per cent of universities by the QS World University Rankings, and 8th in the UK by research power according to REF 2014.

The University of Nottingham in Malaysia (UNMC) is holding events throughout 2015 to celebrate 15 years as a pioneer of transnational education. Based in Semenyih, UMNC was established as the UK's first overseas campus in Malaysia and one of the first world-wide.
