University of Nottingham ranked fourth in the world for university sustainability

Wednesday, 11 December 2019

The results of the 2019 UI Green Metric World University Rankings have been released and the University of Nottingham has once again been named as one of the most sustainable universities in the world.

It was awarded fourth place in the league table of the world’s most environmentally-friendly higher education institutions, which compares universities’ efforts towards campus sustainability and environment friendly university management.

The UI Green Metric is an initiative of Universitas Indonesia that ranks nearly 800 universities throughout the world across a range of areas, including energy use, waste and water management, transport, teaching and learning and research. View the methodology and criteria.

The University first completed this metric in 2010 and was ranked second in the world, and has continued to be placed in the top four every year since.

Andy Nolan, Development and Sustainability Director at the University of Nottingham, said: “The University of Nottingham is delighted at this recognition which is a tribute to the hard work of all of us at the institution. Our global research programme is developing renewable sources of energy, green propulsion systems, climate-resistant crops and sustainable food supplies. Our Carbon Neutral Laboratory in the UK is a model for future scientific facilities.

“We have fully divested from investments in fossil fuels, are cutting single use plastic from our campuses, and careful recycling and reuse policies means that 99 per cent of our waste is diverted from landfill. Our new University Strategy published yesterday, commits the University to joining the city of Nottingham in its ambitions to become carbon-neutral by 2028.”

Wageningen University & Research, the Netherlands, took the top spot, followed by the University of Oxford in second place and the University of California Davis in third. Nottingham Trent University took fifth place, giving Nottingham a remarkable double classification in the top five world rankings.

Studying at the University of Nottingham is a life-changing experience, and we pride ourselves on unlocking the potential of our students. We have a pioneering spirit, expressed in the vision of our founder Sir Jesse Boot, which has seen us lead the way in establishing campuses in China and Malaysia - part of a globally connected network of education, research and industrial engagement.

Nottingham was crowned Sports University of the Year by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2024 – the third time it has been given the honour since 2018 – and by the Daily Mail University Guide 2024.

The university is among the best universities in the UK for the strength of our research, positioned seventh for research power in the UK according to REF 2021. The birthplace of discoveries such as MRI and ibuprofen, our innovations transform lives and tackle global problems such as sustainable food supplies, ending modern slavery, developing greener transport, and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
