Postgraduate Doctoral Loan

Doctoral loan provided by the UK government

A Postgraduate Doctoral Loan can help with course fees and living costs while you study a postgraduate doctoral course, such as a PhD.

You can get a loan of up to £27,265 for research programmes starting on or after 1 August 2021. The amount you'll get is not based on you or your family's income. It will be paid directly to you.

Eligibility

Whether you qualify depends on:

  • your course
  • your age
  • your nationality or residency status

Full eligibility criteria can be found on the GOV.UK website.

Funding for postgraduate loans is different if you normally live in Wales.

Students from the EU, EEA and Switzerland who are resident in the UK with 'settled' or 'pre-settled' status under the EU Settlement Scheme may qualify for a UK doctoral loan. Loans are not available for other international students.
