Types of Research Degree
The School offers three different types of research degree, and can provide a broad range of areas of supervisions for research students.
We welcome applications for any of the following research degrees:

PhD ( Doctor of Philosophy)
The PhD programme is studied full time over 3 years ( for primary research) plus up to one year for writing up of a 100,000 word thesis or if studied part time basis - 6 years for primary research plus up to 2 years for writing up the thesis. This includes training given by the University's Graduate School.

MPhil ( Master of Philosophy)
The MPhil programme is studied full time over 2 years ( for primary research) plus up to one year for the writing up of a 60,000 word thesis or if studied on part time basis - 4 years for primary research plus up to 2 years for writing up of the thesis. This includes training given by the University's Graduate School.

MRes ( Master by Research)
The MRes programme is studied full time for 1 year or part time over 2 years, leading to the submission of a 30-35,000 word thesis. This includes training given by the University's Graduate School. Students taking this programme have the opportunity to take 20-60 credits from a range of research training modules offered by the School.
There is an extensive network of support for research students. Workstations and computers are provided and all research students are offered membeship of at least one of our research centres or institutes, each of which has an ongoing series of seminars, workshops and visiting speakers.
Research student activity is overseen by the Director of Postgraduate Research; there is a weekly colloquium; and the university's Graduate School offers a wealth of training courses dedicated to the needs of the research student community.
