Dr Andreas Fulda appears on Al Jazeera Inside Story

Dr Andreas Fulda, Senior Fellow of the China Policy Institute and Assistant Professor at the School of Politics and International Relations, The University of Nottingham, took part in Al Jazeera Inside Story on 15 July 2017. He was asked to comment on on Chinese Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Liu Xiaobo's untimely death. Dr Fulda suggested that the Chinese authorities carefully stage-managed the whole process to avoid comparisons by Chinese netizens of Liu’s treatment in custody with the treatment of American student Otto Warmbier in North Korea. He argued that with the rise of illiberal governments around the world we should not expect that an imaginary monolithic West will stand up to critique the Chinese government’s human rights record. Dr Fulda made the case that while China was currently experiencing a deep political winter, outsiders should not give up hope that Chinese society can evolve in a more liberal-democratic direction over time.
