Research Topic

Pathologisation, participation and the politics of youth work: An ethnographic study of youth participation projects in Nottingham.

My research explores the pathologisation of youth socialisation by youth policy and the impact this process has on the ‘meso’ level of youth participation – the youth worker – by combining existing understandings of the socialisation of disempowered actors and the dynamics of youth work with the experiences of practitioners in informal youth participation initiatives. Specifically this project brings together feminist analyses of the politics of difference and evidence from ethnographic work at youth clubs to describe and evaluate the conflicts and ruptures within the practice of youth policy.
