Speaker: Chimamaka Mbila, Barrister
Mrs Chimamaka Mbila is a barrister in Nigeria with three years’ practical experience. She possesses a master’s degree specialising in Corporate and Financial law from the University of Derby. She is completing her Ph.D. in law at the University of Hertfordshire focusing on smart contracts and its legal implication on English contract law. She also acts as a welfare benefits legal adviser at the Citizens Advice Bureau. She is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators UK(CIARB) and the Nigerian Bar Association.

Blockchain smart contracts are new forms of contracting with new legal consequences. Their features such as automaticity and immutability bring new advantages and disadvantages which potential users should be aware of. It is imperative that these features and the application of smart contracts be analysed through the lens of both contract law principles and consumer protection laws. We will discuss how smart contracts operate on the blockchain, the blockchain as a durable and legible medium for contracts, the consequence of smart contracting and the current real-life application of smart contracts with the UK legal framework in perspective.
