Sir John Smith Lecture in Criminal Law and Criminal Justice

Mike McConville, Founding Dean and Emeritus Professor, Chinese University of Hong Kong

This year's Sir John Smith Lecture in Criminal Law and Criminal Justice will be given by Mike McConville, Founding Dean and Emeritus Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

The lecture is entitled 'A Century of Crime, Judicial Politics and the Rule of Law' and should appeal to all interested in criminal justice, human rights, political theory and social policy.

Professor McConville, who obtained his PhD from The University of Nottingham and has held prominent positions in many universities, is internationally known for his contributions to the rights of individuals which he has promoted through ground-breaking empirical research projects in the field of criminal justice. He has written extensively on the rights of individuals held in police custody, the rights to legal representation and the right to a fair trial. He has undertaken advisory work in countries undergoing major social transition such as Latvia, Malawi, Turkey, and Peru and with a large group of collaborators he completed an empirical study of Chinese criminal procedure in 2011. His latest book, published in 2015 by Edward Elgar and co-written with Luke Marsh, is Criminal Judges: Legitimacy, Courts and State-Induced Guilty Pleas in Britain.
