Naming Ships in the Viking Era

On 23 February 2016, Judith Jesch gave an invited lecture on Naming Ships in the Viking Era to an audience of about 70 heritage professionals, museum volunteers and interested locals in the small but picturesque Danish town of Kerteminde. Near to Kerteminde is the Viking Museum Ladby, where the Ladby ship-grave was found in the 1930s, and where the impression of the ship that was buried there over a thousand years ago is still preserved in its original spot. For some years now, the museum has been working on a full-scale replica of the ship from the grave, which will now be launched in May 2016. The reconstructed ship needs a name, and locals have now been invited to make suggestions for this name. We await with interest what the new baby will be called.
