Gilkicker and Kickergill, Haslar, Gosport, Hampshire

Richard Coates

Abstract

This article is a discussion of the names of two unusual objects formerly visible on the Hampshire coast overlooking the roadstead Spithead. Several problems with their interpretation are identified. An etymological solution is offered without great confidence, but a range of issues is raised of sufficient interest to provoke further investigation.
