MA field-trip to Appleby Magna, Leicestershire

4th May 2016

Students of place-names following the MA in Viking and Anglo-Saxon Studies today completed a place-names walk, taking in the four counties of Leicestershire, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, and Derbyshire. Historically, these met at No Man’s Heath, where the Four Counties Spice restaurant (formerly the Four Counties Inn) can be found at the intersection of Salt Street and Portway (‘road to a market town’), and close to Gallows Hill and Spellow (‘speech hill-spur’, or ‘speech mound’).
