Happy New Year everyone! Dr Bridget Vincent from the School of English will be kicking things off this term with a session on 'Architecture and Space in the Poetry of Derek Mahon', which will take place on Wednesday 27th January, 3-4pm, Trent C5. In this session, we will be focusing on four texts, including a selection of Derek Mahon's poetry along with an extract from Gaston Bachelard's The Poetics of Space, which Mahon cites as a key influence:

  • Selected poems by Derek Mahon
  • Gaston Bachelard, 'The house, from cellar to garret. The signifcance of the hut', in Poetics of Space
  • Martin Heidegger, 'Building Dwelling Thinking', in Basic Writings
  • Extract from Henri Lefebvre's The Production of Space

As usual, all staff and pg students welcome to attend!
