Transforming global drug testing with mathematics

My research focuses on the use of cardiac electrophysiology modelling for studying pharmaceutical drug safety. Currently, before pharmaceutical drugs are made available to patients, they undergo rigorous processes to ensure they are safe, which involve extensive lab-based testing ahead of clinical trials. It is a time-consuming and expensive business to get a drug to market, with the process from lab to patient taking up to 12 years and costing hundreds of millions of dollars.

My research focuses on developing a way to improve this process and making it easier to identify at an early stage if a drug is likely to have a side effect on the heart, which reduces the use of animals in drug testing, saves the pharmaceutical industry time and money and reduces the risk to those enrolled in clinical trials and ultimately patients. I enjoy the challenge of applying mathematics to a real-world problem, and in this line of research I’m able to face the amazing and complex problems that biology presents, on a daily basis.

Why Nottingham?

The Nottingham research fellowship gives you a great opportunity to focus on your research, find new collaborations, and cement your research to help you become a strong independent researcher.

I chose to do the fellowship program at Nottingham because it’s a great place for interdisciplinary research, and I would encourage anybody that’s thinking about applying for the Nottingham Research Fellowship to give it a go. It’s a great opportunity, with a supportive environment and friendly departments.
