Fire

Fire Procedures for Principal Buildings.

First Aid Fork Lift Trucks Fumigation Entry by Contractors and Maintenance Staff into Laboratories, Workshops and Other Hazardous Areas
  • This procedure is intended to prevent exposure of maintenance operatives to hazardous processes and substances.

    The principles are:

    1) Entry of maintenance operatives into such areas is prohibited without the permission of a responsible person for the area. Signage with contact details to be displayed at the entrance to the room, suite, or building.

    2) The area shall be safe from process hazards for the maintenance work to proceed.

    3) Entry shall be subject to a permit confirming either that the area is clear of process hazards or specifying the precautions to be followed to ensure safety.

    4) Maintenance operatives from both the Estate Office and contractors are instructed in this procedure.


    It is intended that the permit be completed as follows:

    Planned maintenance - the entry form is emailed to the Helpdesk at the same time the works request is submitted. This will avoid a delay on the day.

    Emergency work - a supply of the forms to be available in the area to be completed at the time.

     

Hazardous Waste

  • Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005 - This environmental legislation relates to the segregation, classification and consignment of hazardous waste, including chemical waste. University arrangements and information are described a document on the Environmental Website (Estate Office - contact Gavin Scott, Environment Manager). General information on the environmental aspects of waste disposal can also be found on this website. [N.B the SIC code for the University, which is required for consignment documents, is 80.30/2].
  • Hazardous waste disposal. Schools/departments involved in the generation of hazardous waste e.g ols, solvent, lab chemiclas etc should make arrangements with one of the following waste carrier companies that are approved by the University and on Agresso

    The above carriers make regular collections from various sites  across the main campuses. They will also provide consignment notes and if required will compile inventories and complete paperwork. Both companies will provide emergency clean up and disposal response in the event of spilage or unexpected release.

  • Some aspects of this work is regulated by the Nuclear Safeguards Act and require statutory notification to the Department of Trade and Industry. The Safety Office makes these notifications on behalf of the University and must be informed if any such work is to be carried out - Guidance.
