European and BUCS success for Nottingham Taekwondo athletes

University of Nottingham Taekwondo at the 2023 European Championships

Late last month, University of Nottingham Taekwondo Club members were in action competing across 2 competitions at the European Championships and the BUCS Autumn Championships.

3 of our University of Nottingham Taekwondo club members were part of the 47 strong team selected to represent Great Britain at the 16th European Poomsae & 1st European Para Poomsae Championships in Innsbruck, Austria from the 24th to the 26th November. Across the weekend, our #GreenandGold athletes put in an incredible performance and brought home 4 out of the 11 medals won by the British contingent.

Summer Wahid added European gold to the World Championship gold she achieved in Mexico, whilst 1st year Oluwatimilehim Akinrele won bronze in the men’s team event. Dr Wenqi Li won individual silver medal in the female individual event and added another bronze to her impressive tally in the team event. These are amazing achievements and we would like to say a huge congratulations to all our Poomsae athletes!

On the same weekend, our BUCS competition athletes were in action at the BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) Autumn Championships in St Mary’s University London. The event took place on the 25th November and is the first in a series of three BUCS Taekwondo Tournaments that will conclude in the finals weekend at our very own David Ross Sports Village between 9th & 10th March 2024. The event featured all 4 main disciplines in the Taekwondo programme (WT sparring and patterns and also ITF sparring and patterns).

There were multiple gold medal successes in the Male A-class WT Sparring divisions with both sports scholar Matthew Howell and Mohd Kaif taking to the top step of the podium, whilst Nathan Mumby achieved silver in his first ever A-class final match. In the Female ITF A-class Sparring division Riya Patel won bronze and another debutant Lucia Antoniou qualified in 4th place to make it to her first ever final in the ITF Female patterns event.

There were also medal successes for our players in the B & C class divisions. The B-class WT Poomsae team of Beth Evans, Norman Galiza and University of Nottingham Taekwondo Club President Ella Bowen won silver, whilst debutant Troy Clarke won a bronze medal in the C-class Male WT Sparring event. Congratulations to all our BUCS competitors and volunteer officials who helped make this event a success. All results from the BUCS championships can be found here.

Rounding out the magnificent achievements of our athletes, we were also very proud to see Wenqi Li and Oluwatimilehin Akinrele named as the Elite Male & Female Athletes of the Year at the annual British Taekwondo Awards for 2023!
