Green and Gold Dominate 2023 BUCS Table Tennis Championships

University of Nottingham at the 2023 BUCS Table Tennis Championships

The University of Nottingham had the pleasure of hosting the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) Table Tennis Individual National Championship last month. Over the weekend of the 17th to the 19th of November, the University of Nottingham was excited to welcome universities from across the country across the weekend, as a huge 332 competitors took part in the men’s singles with 136 in the women’s singles.

Once again held at David Ross Sports Village, the weekend consisted of fast, intense hit-out games featuring 40 tables in operation, all demonstrating the highest level of talent of university sport. The 2023 championships saw fantastic moments for our Nottingham players, with the University of Nottingham Table Tennis club securing 13 of 20 medals available at the meeting, and dominating the competition on home turf by sweeping all 5 gold medals!

Amongst those representing the #GreenandGold was Shayan Siraj (pictured) who retained his triple gold from last year, winning three titles (Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles) in back-to-back years. Shayan expressed his pride in his achievements, stating, “It feels great to retain all three titles this year! The weekend was tough with lots of matches but I’m glad I could battle through.” Shayan would win his men’s doubles crown with Shohei Nishi, and paired with Tin Tin Ho in the mixed doubles.

The women’s sinlges proved to be a tough competition with many England International players contending for the title, including UoN scholar Tin Tin Ho who ended the weekend with two golds and one silver! However, it was teammate, Poon Yat who would take on Ho in the women’s singles final, secured the title in a very tense final that went all the way with a 3-2 final score (11-9,14-12, 4-11,7-11, 11-8). Yat and Ho also both took to the podium in the women’s doubles, this time teaming together to take home the gold medal and emphasise their place at the top of women’s university table tennis.

Robert Pelc, President of UoN Table Tennis comments that for the future of the club they hope to continue their winning streaks in the year ahead and hope to maintain their placing as the No.1 UK University Table Tennis club. We would like to say a huge congratulations to all of the University of Nottingham athletes who took part in the Championships across the weekend and wish them best for the upcoming year.
