Gymnastics club record broken at 2023 BUCS championships

Sam Mostowfi - BUCS Gymnastics 23

The University of Nottingham Gymnastics club made sure that the month of February, and the busy term two period, began with a huge performance by creating history at the 2023 BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) Championships.

Traveling the short distance to New College in Leicester on the weekend of the 4 and 5 February, the club headed into the competition with confidence from their University Gymnastics Cup performances, as well as fond memories from last year’s BUCS championships, aiming for a similar display.

Both Euan Cox and Sam Mostowfi were a part of the successful #GreenandGold contingent from twelve months ago and delivered again, this time in the men’s individual elite category. Sam Mostowfi took home gold in the All-around competition to become national champion, alongside finishing first on High Bar, second on Parallel Bars and floor, and third on both Vault and Rings, to complete a phenomenal weekend. Team mate Euan Cox placed third on High Bar. Alongside them in the men’s advanced category, Kieran Craig placed third in the All-around competition, and second on Vault.

Even with this success, it would be University of Nottingham women gymnasts who would earn the most medals on the weekend. In the Women’s Elite category, Abigail Virgo placed first on Uneven Bars and earned a fantastic bronze in the All-around, and Louise Akers placed second on Vault. In the women’s advanced category, Emily Chrzan also earned a second place, this on the Balance Beam, whilst in the women’s intermediate category Ujanah Ofuyaekpone-Shombe placed third on Vault. Moving into the women’s novice category, Lottie Keefe placed second on Vault with team mate Kim Barton finishing one place behind in third to round out some brilliant individual performances from our gymnasts.

The group of four Nottingham women’s gymnasts that comprised of Louise Akers, Abigail Virgo, Ellie Vine and Emily Chrzan, all delivered on the big stage to claim a superb silver in the team event.

Congratulations to all of our athletes on another fantastic BUCS Championships. In total the club managed to earn a total of seventeen medals which we believe is the highest number that University of Nottingham Gymnastics club has ever won at the BUCS Championships. More impressively, this meeting was also the first time competing for many of the clubs members and we look forward to the club continuing this success at their upcoming competitions in Milton Keynes and Newcastle, whilst also inspiring more students to try the sport.
