Medals and personal bests at BUCS Outdoor Athletics Championships

University of Nottingham Sport at BUCS Outdoor Athletics Championships 2024 - Daniel Goriola

After a brilliant season of indoor competition for the University of Nottingham Athletics Club which included fantastic performances at BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) Nationals, the club travelled to Manchester last weekend (4th-6th May) for the 2024 BUCS Outdoor Athletics Championships.

Taking on the best that British university athletics has to offer, our Nottingham athletes equipped themselves with aplomb to deliver the most successful BUCS Outdoor Championships in recent history. Finishing 5th overall in the university rankings, the #GreenandGold took home a trio of medals, and registered plenty of impressive performances.

Scholar Daniel Goriola took to the track for the 110m hurdles looking to add to his gold medal in the 60m hurdles from BUCS Nationals, and would go on to once again defeat the competition to claim top step on the podium and become a double BUCS champion. Simran Kaur also tasted medal success at Nationals, and went on to better her Nationals performance with two medal wins at the Outdoor Championships - taking home a silver in the Women's 200m Ambulant, and a bronze in the Women's 100m Ambulant. Away from the track, Archie Small competed in the Men's Hammer Throw and rounded out the medals for the University of Nottingham by winning a superb silver.

Alongside these medal performances, our Nottingham athletes achieved 13 personal best performances across the weekend of competion, in which many would have been competing in their summer season opening events. The achievements of our athletes also included top four finishes for Olivia Reah in the Women's Triple Jump, Sikiru Onigbanjo in the Men's 100m and our Women's 4x400m Relay team of Hermione Mason, Mia Oldfield, Sophie McIlroy, Kaytlin Roberts and Dijana Clarke.

Reflecting on the successful performances, Head Sprints Coach Paul Blakely told us that "I thought a lot of individual athletes excelled themselves in their events, which bodes well for them in the next year. I was extremely happy with the team’s constant support and togetherness they showed throughout the 3 days, which was a humbling experience to witness." Team captain Aron Traves also added "a big thank you to all of our athletes who gave it their all this weekend and thank you to our coaches Paul Blakey, David Lisgo and Gareth Davies for their support across the weekend."

We congratulate all of our athletes and coaches on their success on the track and in the field this season. You can find a full recap of the BUCS Outdoor Athletics Championships results here

Our athletes will now be looking forward to continuing their summer seasons with many regional and national championships around the corner they will be looking to build on their successes over this previous weekend.
