Nottingham boxers go the distance at the 2024 BUCS Championships

University of Nottingham Sport at the 2024 BUCS Boxing Championships

The University of Nottingham were represented by six athletes at the 2024 BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) Boxing Championships which took place in Portsmouth at the start of February. Over the weekend of the 2nd to the 4th, our boxers fought through different rounds with the aim of becoming national champion in their weight and category, delivering fantastic performances along the way.

Of the six athletes representing the university at the championships, five managed to take a step on the podium and earn a medal for their efforts. Two of those would take to the top step with Akin Tijani and Freddie Dooley both becoming BUCS Champion. Tijani was crowned victorious in the U92kg category for those with 0-7 bouts, whilst Freddie Dooley came through the U67kg B category for those with 0-7 bouts and earned two wins by TKO along the way to his medal.

There would also be representation at the championships in the women's competition with Charlotte Spencer entering the u60kg category for those with 0-5 bouts. Spencer defeated Lori Ryder of Coventry in the semi final before a valiant effort in the final earned a fantastic silver medal.

Rounding out the medals for Nottingham would be third place finishes for Emmanuel Appiah (u75kg class A for those with 0-7 bouts) and Zak White-Sey (u60kg for those with 0-7 bouts). These two bronze medal performances heleped to produce one of the most successful BUCS Boxing Championships for the University of Nottingham Boxing Club, completing a set of 5 medals for the university.

Congratulations to all of our boxers on their success, and a thank you to Daniel McCulla, Rio Chung, Mohammed Gebaly and everyone on the University of Nottingham Boxing Club committee for their support and organisation in the run-up to, and at the championships. We and the club also thank Gene Warburton and Ross Simons from Clifton ABC for helping to train our boxers.

Looking ahead, the club are looking forward to continued training and competition throughout the year ahead as they start preparations for an equally incredible BUCS Championships in 2025! You can follow the clubs progress by following them on social media.
