The month of April saw the University of Nottingham's weightlifting athletes travel to Wales to enter the 2023 BUCS Weightlifting and Para-Powerlifting Championships. Taking place at Bangor University on the 22nd and 23rd of the month, Nottingham had entrants in both the men's and women's competitions, with huge success across both. Both competitions saw lifters tackle six lifts, with three snatch and three clean and jerk.

In one of the performances of the weekend, University of Nottingham lifter Isabella Brown lifted 85 and 107 in her respective lifts to post a total of 192 which would ensure Brown finished well clear of her competition to claim a magnificent gold medal and become BUCS champion in the women's -76kg competition! Adding to Isabella's success was Emily Sweeney who competed in the -87kg category. Emily posted a total score of 200 to also take home a gold medal and ensure multiple women's BUCS Weightlifting champions for the University of Nottingham! Both athletes are University of Nottingham sport scholars and we congratulate both Isabella and Emily on their achievements.

The men's -89kg competition would be the highlight category for our male athletes as both Edward Smale (pictured) and Chris Russ delivered fantastic performances in both of their sets of lifts with Chris Russ posting a total of 280 which would be enough to beat the rest of the competition - apart from his #GreenandGold teammate. Edward Smale also competed in the -89kg category, and with lifts of 137 in the snatch and 165 in the clean and jerk, finished clear of the field to secure a one-two finish for the University of Nottingham. Both proudly took their place on the podium to collect their gold and silver medals,  rounding out a fantastic event for our group of weightlifters. Reflecting on the success, champion Edward Smale told us that "it's brilliant to have claimed gold in my first competition representing the University of Nottingham."

We congratulate all of our athletes on their performances at the 2023 BUCS Championships and look forward to their efforts at the upcoming British Championships in August.
