University of Nottingham athletes from UoN Tri opened the duathlon season with podium finishes and plenty of success to build on for the season ahead. The BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) Duathlon Championships for 2023-24 took place in Kirkby Mallory on Saturday 18th November and saw good representation from #GreenandGold athletes.
Amongst those representing the university was Simon Davis who tackled the 5km run, 20km bike, and 2.5km run with aplomb. Simon finished the course in a fantastic second place, securing a silver medal in the Open Individual event. However, this performance would also earn Simon a second piece of hardware as the efforts of Nottingham team mates Oliver Conway and Oliver Mills also saw the University of Nottingham take to the top step of the podium in the Open Overall Team event. The team placing for the Open Overall Team event was determined by the fastest cumulative time for three open athletes from the same institution, with the three Nottingham athletes delivering superb performances to claim an incredible gold!
Simon Davis reflected on his victorious weekend by saying "I’m really happy to finally get a BUCS individual medal but even happier to be a part of the club's first ever BUCS gold medal in the team competition. The race was fast from the gun, but I managed to get myself to the front and set the pace coming in to transition in a small group of 3. The bike was a bit chaotic with over 100 athletes causing lots of lapped traffic. I was caught by two of the faster bikers but managed to run myself back up into 2nd on the final run. Overall, very happy with my performance, this is a strange time of year for racing as most of us have just come from an off-season so to be racing and feeling good now definitely helps with the motivation for the long winter months ahead."
