University of Nottingham at BUCS Powerlifting 2023

15 University of Nottingham Powerlifting athletes competed at the 2023 BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) Powerlifting Championships at the start of the month, and produced some excellent performances. 8 female and 7 male athletes travelled to Moulton College in Northampton for the event, looking to continue the clubs incredible form

At the competition, Cyrus Khine and Ana Thompson achieved exactly that by placing themselves on the podium in the men's U93kg and women's U69kg competitions respectively, alongside breaking British university records. Cyrus placed second and broke the British university squat record with a 283.5 kg squat, whilst Ana Thompson won bronze and also broke the British university deadlift record with a 190.5kg deadlift. Across the course of the four days of action, 11 university club records were also broken, highlighting the continued progression of many of our athletes and the programme as a whole.

There were also big totals for our women lifters across other weight classes with Mia Wannop competing in the U52kg category totalling 280 kg, and In the U63kg category Effie Menzies totalled 315kg, Gemma Smith totalled 320kg and Sophie Fowler totalled 325kg. As Ana Thompson's total of 400.5 kg placed her third in the U69kg, team mates Mia Versluys and Laura Haywood also managed great lifts with 332.5kg and 362.5kg respectively. Also representing Nottingham, Kerry Wood competed in the U76kg category totalling 387.5 kg.

In the men's competitions Kairo Dodd competed in the U74kg category totalling 542.5 kg, whilst JJ Daley competed in the U83kg category earning 577.5kg. Reflecting on the clubs success at the 2023 BUCS Championships, president Hannah Matson said "I am so thrilled by everyone's performance and the dedication of the team. Everyone gave their all and it was a great five days. BUCS is a really great event to get involved in and wouldn’t run without the help of volunteers who I also want to give a massive thank you to."

The club are now looking forward to competing at Junior Nationals which takes place at the end of April. If you would like to keep up to date with our Powerlifting clubs performances, you can follow them on social media here
