UoN Taekwondo deliver seasons best performance at BUCS Spring Championships

University of Nottingham Taekwondo at BUCS Spring Championships 2023

After a very successful Winter Championships in February, University of Nottingham Taekwondo club travelled to Wales for the BUCS Spring Championships at the end of March. At the two day competition over the weekend of 25 and 26 March, the club entered athletes across many classes and disciplines, and came away with medals in all!

Scholar Matthew Howell continues to deliver gold medal after gold medal at BUCS competitions, adding the 2023 Spring Championships A class WT sparring -68kg edition to his collection, whilst Toby Cheung earned gold in the same discipline but at -54kg.

Jen Feron won gold in the A class ITF sparring (-72kg), and the top spots on the podium continued for the University of Nottingham as Jacob Thorley built on his gold at the Winter Championships to claim another victory in the A class ITF patterns (-78kg), as well as adding a silver in the ITF sparring (-78kg).

Thorley’s team mate Norman Galiza also continued his success from the Winter Championships, but this time took home an individual gold in the B class WT sparring (-68kg) to accompany another team gold with Harriet McGrath and Ella Bowen in the B class WT teams poomsae.

The club’s overall medal tally at the championships finished at six golds, two silvers, and four bronze, making the 2023 Spring Championships the best BUCS competition of the year for the club. We would like to congratulate the club on their continued success.

University of Nottingham Taekwondo Publicity Sec. Kiah Kearney told us that, “this was a great competition and everyone in the club should be proud of their performance. It was a good weekend filled with excellent taekwondo, laughter and success.”

The majority of the team are straight back into training, preparing for their next grading and competition with Matthew Howell and Toby Cheung having qualified for EUSA. Jacob Thorley is also training for the European ITF Taekwondo championships in Italy in the middle of April, and we wish all three the very best of luck.
