Congratulations on securing your place to come and study with us. We are very much looking forward to you joining the School of Geography as one of our postgraduate students.

Over the coming year, you will develop environmental leadership and management competencies by engaging with cutting edge environmental research, cultivating independent critical thinking, developing practical skills for environmental problem solving, and being immersed in real-world environmental settings.

There is a diverse curriculum consisting of input from many environmental experts both within and outside the university, and a varied spread of learning activities. The result is an academic programme that will be a springboard to an environmental career that makes a real difference. To learn more about the modules, learning activities and assessments within the MSc ELM, check out the programme Moodle page.

Before beginning your studies with us, we encourage you to enrol and get started with the NOOC (Nottingham Open Online Course) 'On Course for Your Masters', which you will be able to access through Moodle. You will also be able to find a recommended pre-reading list on Moodle. For other information about the MSc programme and what to expect, feel free to contact the programme director Dr Chris Ives.

Your new community

As part of the MSc ELM there are many opportunities to connect with staff who support you in your studies and to get to know your fellow course mates.

Pastoral care and study skills support

You will be allocated a member of staff as your personal tutor at the start of the academic year. Your tutor will help you settle into life at Nottingham, answer questions you might have about the programme and be your go-to contact for any pastoral care issues for the duration of your degree.

During induction week, your tutor will arrange a one-to-one meeting with you – this will allow us to get to know you personally and to learn how we can help support you in your studies. The rest of the teaching staff on the programme are all easily contactable via email and happy to answer any questions you may have.

In addition to pastoral care support, Dr Geertje van der Heijden will run two skills-based training sessions in the induction week that will cover topics such as professional writing and academic referencing. Throughout your studies there will be many opportunities for you to interact directly with environmental experts in our school both privately and in larger interactive sessions.

Getting to know your peers

There will be many opportunities for you to get to know your MSc ELM peers and to be part of our school's postgraduate community. Much of your learning across the programme will be done via interacting with people you're studying alongside.

Through in-person workshops and the use of specially designed digital learning platforms, you will be able to discuss new ideas, plan projects and create outputs in teams, just as you would in environmental practice. There will also be opportunities for you to connect informally with your peers and to make new friends.

On behalf of the School of Geography, we look forward to welcoming you to the MSc ELM community this autumn.

Warmly, Dr Geertje van der Heijden and Dr Chris Ives
