Welcome to the Department of History. This page provides you with some initial information about our department and how you can prepare for studying with us.

We are delighted that you are a student at Nottingham, and we look forward to working with you. During the first week of your induction, you will have an opportunity to meet members of the department, including your personal tutor who will normally act as a guide to the first two years of your undergraduate study. We take personal tutoring very seriously, including the mental and physical wellbeing of our students. A conversation with your personal tutor is a safe space and your first port of call toward resolving any issues related to your time with us. Your personal tutor will help you access the system of student support run by the university, as well as offering advice along the way.

Wherever your interests lie, we hope to broaden your understanding, as well as helping you to develop your intellectual confidence and maturity.

We hope you enjoy your time at Nottingham. If you’re unsure about anything in these early weeks, don’t be afraid to ask questions or seek help from staff – especially your personal tutor.

What to expect during Welcome

Welcome Week will be filled with many introductions, formal events organised by the Department of History, and many opportunities to attend events dealing with study skills and welfare issues. Links to sessions, as well as additional important information, will be found on the History induction page/welcome timetables once they have been finalised.

Choosing your modules

During Welcome, some students on some degree programmes will be asked to choose optional modules along with the compulsory modules for their course. To help with this task, we have created some guidance for you which we would encourage you to read before you arrive. This guidance can be found on your community hubs. You can access this once you have your University of Nottingham username.

Next steps

Keep an eye out for an email explaining how to register online using your University of Nottingham username and password. Once you have that information, take a look at the module guidance on Moodle. Those students on programmes with optional elements might want to start thinking about which modules to choose. Postgraduate research students will also receive an email from their supervisors.

Reading list

Once you arrive you will have access to a number of on-campus libraries where you can read and study. The libraries also provide access to thousands of e-books and online academic journals. For those who wish to get started with some reading before they have access to these materials, we have put together a list of books that you might want to take a look at.
