The Centre for Social Work

Welcome to the Centre for Social Work. Here you will find more information about the centre and our team.

Welcome from the Head of School, Professor Rachel Fyson

Welcome to the School of Sociology and Social Policy – I am delighted that success in your previous studies now means that you can join us for the next stage in your academic journey.

Your social work degree programme, with its range of taught modules and placements, will challenge, stimulate and inspire you during your time with us. Our programmes are designed to not only give you a set of skills and knowledge which will meet the requirements for registration with Social Work England but will also be highly attractive to future employers.

Although the immediate impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic are now beginning to recede, many of the challenges and opportunities for changing how we connect and communicate continue to affect both social work and wider society. In many ways Covid revealed both the best and the worst of humanity and social work now has an important role to play in making sure that the world does not simply return to ‘business as usual’. Studying here will help you to become part of re-shaping our society, by helping you to develop your own vision of the world – both as it is and how it might be. These are exciting times for studying social work.

I hope that you enjoy your time with us: that you meet new people, embrace opportunities for new and different experiences, and discover fresh understandings of the world we share.

Welcome to the Centre for Social Work

The Centre for Social Work has been delivering social work education for over 60 years and we can't wait to meet you.

Message from Rachael Clawson, Director for the Centre for Social Work

Dear social work students,

Whether you are new to the Centre for Social Work or returning to study with us, I would like to start by offering a very warm welcome for the new academic year! The Centre for Social Work team are really looking forward to welcoming you and are excited about what this new academic year will hold

Social work is a rewarding, diverse and challenging profession, underpinned by a rich and dynamic history of advocating for social justice. Now, perhaps more than ever, there is an unprecedented need for passionate, motivated and ethical social workers. We are thrilled to be part of your journey with you.

New social work students who would like to get started with preparing for the academic year can find resources including DBS checks and important funding information.

You could also spend some time familiarising yourself with this webpage, which is where you will find all information you will need about the programme, wider university support and much more!
