Hi, I’m Madeleine, a second-year Liberal Arts student and Environmental and Social Justice Officer for the 2023/24 academic year.
I was elected late in the year to the post of ESJ officer but I’m excited to launch some events in the spring semester for students to connect and enact change on campus. As ESJ officer I want to provide space for students to confront the realities of climate change and turn that grief into a drive for change. I’m working with the sustainability team to create regular ‘climate anxiety’ cafes where students can connect and collectively understand climate grief. I plan to pair this with initiatives that attempt to tackle social injustices, such as fundraisers to help people in Gaza, and the cost-of-living crisis, by working with Nottingham Dining Co-op to bring cheap, healthy, plant-based meals to students and the wider Nottingham community in a community space.
By creating spaces that tackle the intersection between environmental oppression and social injustices, I hope to enable change to be collectively envisioned. Follow me on Instagram @uonsu_esjnetwork to keep up with events.

A new hedgerow, full of wildlife-friendly plants and trees, is being planted on university land by students and staff. The hedgerow will create additional wild space and ‘green corridors’ along the River Trent, at the edge of some of Nottingham’s large industrial areas.
