FoundationJump to undergraduate courses

Study with us because:

  • Our foundation programmes are an opportunity  to gain the skills and knowledge needed to  undertake a bachelors degree while studying  at a world-class university.
  • As a foundation student you will be a full  member of the University and will have full  access to all the opportunities, support and  facilities on offer (see pages 9-48).
  • Our courses are carefully designed to prepare  you for degree-level study and our progression  rate is high.

Which programme?

We offer four programmes: the Foundation Certificate in Arts and Social Sciences, the Foundation Certificate in Business, the Engineering Foundation Year and the Science Foundation Year.

The Foundation Certificates in Arts and Social Sciences and in Business are designed for international students with high academic ability who need an extra year’s study to prepare them for a bachelors degree in an arts, business or social sciences subject, either at The University of Nottingham or another university. You will meet and make lifelong contacts and will benefit from a comprehensive support network.

The Engineering and Science Foundation Year programmes are open to UK and international students whose school leaving qualifications do not meet the requirements for undergraduate programmes in science, including computer science, and engineering. They have been specifically designed to provide you with the best possible grounding for entry into our wide range of undergraduate degree programmes. Provided you successfully complete the foundation year at Nottingham and pass the relevant modules at the required standard, you will be able to progress into year one of your chosen degree subject.

Your teaching will be delivered by academic staff from within the Faculties of Engineering and Science. This will ensure that the foundation course is fully integrated into your degree programme and the topics you cover during the foundation stage are perfectly matched to subsequent stages of your course. For this reason the success rate for students progressing from our foundation programme is very high.

We also offer courses with foundation, gateway or preliminary years. For information please see:

Healthcare Science with Foundation Year (B902)

Medicine with Foundation Year (A108)

Veterinary Medicine and Surgery including a Gateway Year (D190)

Veterinary Medicine and Surgery including a Preliminary Year (D104)
