Alabaster stela of Ashurnasirpal II, 9th century BC, Nimrud
King Ashurnasirpal II (884 - 859 BC) worships in front of the symbols of his gods. The symbols are, from left to right: the 8-pointed star of Ishtar the goddess of war and fertility, the thunderbolt of Adad the storm god, the crescent moon disc of Sin, the frilly sun symbol of Assur (or Ashur, after whom the Assyrians are named), and the tiara of Anu the sky god. Around his neck the king wears the symbols of the sun god (cross) and Ishtar. In his left hand he holds a sceptre.
