Project Overview
A series of art-geography projects focussed on Margate in Kent, England, which explored ideas of representation of the urban landscape. 'Hawley Square' was the main project of three under the umbrella of 'Mapping Change', all three taking Margate as their subject, with the ultimate aim of creating a large number of representations of Margate that relate image to place. Five themes of representation namely ‘surveying’, ‘networks’, ‘3D model’, ‘function’, ‘landcover’, shared by artists and geographers/surveyors formed the focus of investigation by the participants, working either individually or collaboratively. Participants in the project included Paul Aplin from the GIS research theme and Charles Watkins of the Cultural and Historical Geographies theme. The project resulted in an exhibition and colloquium at the Community Pharmacy Gallery, Margate, Kent, between 1st and 15th December 2001. Of the other projects 'Crossing' associated representation with seven specific routes through the town, integrating spatially referenced imagery via a Shockwave 3D moive. 'Gridlock' integrated a large number of representations (over 170), each representing a square area on the ground, producing a mosaic-map of Margate.
