Olivier's (1792) description of the queen is at - . Forel's (1874) description of the other forms is at . F Smith's (1878) description of basalis is at , he gave it as "shining black": and it seems unlikely to be a synonym of sylvaticus.

Egypt record - workers & queen from Kantara, Suez, collected by Issel, in Emery (1877b: 364) but apparently not listed in Emery (1925b: 101). Previously, we thought this might be the species illustrated by Savigny (Audouin, J.-V. 1825-27: Plate 20 Fig 2) but now feel that was probably Camponotus cognatocompressus.
