Crematogaster (Crematogaster) aegyptiaca Mayr

return to key {link to the Hymenoptera Name Server}Type location Egypt (Cremastogaster aegyptiaca n. sp., Mayr, 1862: 765, worker) specimen in Vienna Museum - no images on Antweb (October 2015).
subspecies pharaonis (Crematogaster egyptiaca Mayr stirps pharonis n. st., Santschi, 1914a: 432, worker) from Egypt, Bir Hooker, J Dewiz - see below.
Worker and queen described (see Bolton, 1995) .

{Crematogaster aegyptiaca}Mayr's (1862) description is at {original description}. Emery's (1877b) description of robusta is at {original description}. Santschi's (1914a) description of pharaonis is at {original description}

Note - the record of "Crematogaster aegyptiaca Mayr subsp. senegalensis var. robusta Emery" by Finzi (1939a) was not Cr. aegyptiaca but Crematogaster senegalensis possibly varying from the type form. Emery only ever described the sexual forms of robusta and in his 1915 paper cited by Finzi further confused the situation, as he (Emery, 1915g: 4 & 10) listed "Crematogaster aegyptiaca senegalensis Rog.; var. robusta Emery; Nefasit, worker & queen". The Antweb images of the robusta queen appear to be senegalensis and I have posted the montage there.

Not aegyptiaca:
Crematogaster (Cr.) senegalensis robusta (Cremastogaster robusta n. sp., Emery, 1877b: 379, queen & male; Emery, 1915g: 10, worker) from Eritrea, Keren, Beccari.
Crematogaster (Cr.) turkanensis (Crematogaster (Acrocoelia) aegyptiaca Mayr v. turkanensis nov., Santschi, 1935b: 271, worker) from Kenya, Turkana Desert, Kalodeke. Santschi's (1935b) description of turkanensis is at {original description}.

{Crematogaster aegyptiaca}Collingwood (1985, illustrated), for specimens from Saudi Arabia, had propodeal spines broadly dentate, less than 0.13 mm; gaster with superficial sculpture and coarse pubescence; body colour reddish-brown

{Crematogaster aegyptiaca pharaonis} The photomontage of the pharaonis type worker is collated from http://www.antweb.org/specimen.do?name=casent0912635.
