Books
The main textbook for this module is:
- A Liddle, An introduction to modern cosmology, 2nd edition (Wiley, 2003).
There are lots of cosmology books in the library in sections QB 981 and 991. There has been a lot progress in cosmology (in particular with observations, but also theory) in the last decade. Therefore you need to bear in mind that some sections of books published more than a decade ago (or even more recently) will be out of date.
Other useful books at a similar level to Liddle include:
Berry, Principles of cosmology & gravitation, more detail about the gravitational aspects
Bothun, Modern cosmological observations & problems, more on observations and structure formation
Roos, Introduction to cosmology, similar level and topics to Liddle, but a bit more mathematical detail
Rowan-Robinson, Cosmology, more on observations and astronomy
Ryden, Introduction to cosmology, similar level and topics to Liddle, but a bit more detail
Interesting popular science books include (you should be able to guess from the titles what they're about!):
Guth, The inflationary Universe
Hooper, Dark cosmos
Weinberg, The first three minutes
Silk, The big bang
More advanced textbooks (which in particular may be of interest for MSci students planning to take F34MCO Modern cosmology) include:
Dodelson, Modern cosmology, detailed calculations of structure formation and the Cosmic Microwave Background
Kolb & Turner, The early Universe, a classic book covering a wide range of topics (including nucleosynthesis, structure formation, dark matter and inflation), a little bit out-dated now
Mukhanov, Physical foundations of cosmology, similar range of topics to Kolb & Turner, but more up to date
Peacock, Cosmological physics, covers pretty much everything, a good place to look if you'd like to know a little bit more about anything we've covered
