Biography

Rabi Chhantyal Pun grew up in Kathmandu, Nepal, where he finished his schooling. He traveled to the USA for higher education and received his Bachelors degree in Chemistry in 2007 at Newman University, followed by a PhD in 2013 at the Ohio State University. His PhD study under Prof Terry Miller involved spectroscopic studies of peroxy and alkoxy radicals. He then moved to the UK to start postdoctoral research under Prof Andrew Orr-Ewing FRS at the University of Bristol looking at various Criegee intermediates reactions. During this time, he collaborated extensively with Prof Dudley Shallcross, also at University of Bristol, to perform chemical transport modeling and with Dr Craig Taatjes at Sandia National Laboratories using synchrotron radiation to measure various oxygenated products from Criegee intermediate reactions. In 2021, Rabi started his independent position as Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of Nottingham.

Current Research

Research in my group is geared towards greater understanding of chemical processes in the atmosphere. To this end, we develop novel experimental methods to directly probe reactive intermediates and make use of quantum chemistry calculations and numerical box modeling. Current research in the group is focused on studies of auto-oxidation reactions of peroxy radicals and Criegee intermediate chemistry.
