Biography

Professor Neil Hughes obtained a PhD in Politics from the University of Sheffield under the supervision of Professor Jean Grugel in 1997. He also has an MA in Latin American Studies from the University of Liverpool, an M.Ed from the University of Manchester and post-graduate qualifications in NGO management from the Complutense University in Madrid.

His research spans blended and blended language learning, digitally- enhanced teaching and learning in the Arts and Humanities, Critical Discourse Analysis and Social Movement Studies with a particular emphasis on Spain. He has published book chapters and articles on these issues in: Barataria, Arts and Humanities in Higher Education (forthcoming), The Language Learning Journal and Social Movement Studies. In 2020, he was the Association for Learning Technology's (ALT) Learning Technologist of the Year in the research category.

In 2023, a MOOC he authored titled Blended and Hybrid Learning Design in Higher Education, was released on the FutureLearn platform.

Professor Hughes teaches Business and Society in Contemporary Spain. This module explores Spanish business from both a historical and contemporary perspective. The main themes include the economic legacy of dictatorship, the impact on Spanish business of changes in the global and European regulatory environment, the influence of neoliberal thinking on Spanish business practices, the role of entrepreneurship, the relationship between state and business in the area of economic decision making and Spanish business' response to the spread of the knowledge economy and rapid technological change.

Professor Hughes also delivers CPD training primarily in the areas of blended and hybrid learning design.
