Biography
Dr Joanna Wisniowska is an Assistant Professor in Intellectual Property Law at the School of Law. She holds a qualifying Master's degree in law from Jagiellonian University in Poland (2016) and Magister Juris degree from the University of Oxford (2017). Joanna was awarded her PhD in Law from the University of Nottingham (2023) after defending the doctoral thesis titled: "The morality exception in European patent law: a universal theory of interpretation devised for the Unified Patent Court". Joanna was supervised by Professor Paul Torremans and Dr Andrea Tosato.
Prior to her doctoral studies, Joanna was practicing law in a top-tier intellectual property law firm in Poland. As an IP lawyer, she was part of the Trade Marks & Patents Team as well as Technology Media and Telecommunications (TMT) Team, where she provided comprehensive legal advice to Polish and international clients in the field of trade marks, designs, patents, copyright, IT law, unfair competition law, and civil law. She was also involved in IP-related disputes and proceedings before domestic and European authorities.
Joanna joined the School of Law in August 2023. She gained her experience as a Postgraduate Research Tutor at the University of Nottingham and a Lecturer in Law at Nottingham Trent University, where she was teaching intellectual property at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, as well as European Union law, EU competition law, data protection law, and commercial law.
Expertise Summary
Joanna's expertise cover intellectual property law, with particular focus on patent and trade mark law. She is researching patentability of biotechnological and pharmaceutical inventions, current issues in European and international IP law, as well as commercial and economic aspects of intellectual property rights. Due to her prior experience, Joanna is also interested in projects at the intersection of IP and commercial law, as well as unfair competition law, trade secrets, EU competition law and corporate insolvency.

Current Research
Joanna's research focuses on the European patent system and the prospected operations of the Unified Patent Court in the field of life science and biotechnological inventions. In her doctoral thesis, she explored concepts of morality and ordre public in the European Patent Convention and the EU Biotech Directive. The project devised the theory of interpretation of the morality exception tailored to the Unified Patent Court and other supranational patent bodies.
Past Research
Joanna's past research agenda included a reform-oriented project proposing new legal provisions governing effects of the commencement of insolvency proceedings on IP license agreements under the Polish law undertaken from a comparative perspective. She also worked for the research institute on a project focusing on legal safeguards protecting consumers in the EU capital markets.
