Figure holding head where face is a clock

Mustak's story

The story may contain themes of a sensitive nature. See our guidance on viewing the exhibition.

When Mustak met Andy at his studio the first thing he said was:

I’m the guy with the clock in his head.

He has been hearing a clock ticking inside his head for many years, and wants “someone to remove it”. Whilst Mustak jokes about the clock it is a source of irritation and frustration.

Mustak, a graduate from Nottingham Trent and Nottingham Universities, is receiving both anti-psychotic medication and talking therapies. He described to Andy how he feels like he is playing a character "the Lad". He wants to move on from this:

To put on my sensible hat and move on, be a regular normal guy.

Andy’s painting was inspired by Mustak sitting in a chair talking about how his conditions leaving feeling frustrated and angry at times. He has a strong desire to be free of the noises and voices in his head, and in particular the ticking clock. A clock that he sees as a cheap analogue faced one. He wants to move forward with his life, but as he says:

I still don’t know where I’m going.

Commenting on the painting Mustak:

I found the painting to be really useful because it’s really difficult to explain.
