We are delighted to introduce our 2020 Tomlinson lecture speaker, Haushala Thapa, Haushala Creatives, Nepal who will be discussing  Disaster relief after the Nepal earthquake.

Abstract

Haushala Thapa was directly involved in the first response of help to four government schools based in the Lalitpur and Kavre districts of Nepal which were affected by the disastrous 2015 earthquake. Alongside her team of friends and the community she established a CYF collective at the community hangout space for three months starting from the first week after the earthquake.  This responded to calls for immediate help and helicopter rescue in Lalitpur, Kavre , Sindhupalchowk and Dhading. In the annual Tomlinson lecture she shares her experiences, reflections, and recommendations for effective disaster relief strategies.

Biography

Haushala Thapa is an educator and an environment activist. She started her journey at the age of 21 years old  by rescuing kids from an orphanage and established a school dedicated for providing quality education to marginalised kids in Nepal.
Haushala established and runs a women's cooperative called Haushala Creatives which empowers mothers of the children - supported by the organisation CYF Nepal. The women receive free skill based training in designing, stitching, knitting and budgeting. The cooperative also hosts Global Clothing Swaps which help the younger generation understand the environmental and human impact of the fashion industry.
