Spell out "first", "second" and so on up to "ninth". Use numbers and "st" / "nd" / "th" for 10th and over:
I came second in the foot race last year, but this year I came 162nd.
But never do this when writing dates:
My parcel arrived on the 5th of December.
My parcel arrived on 5 December.
