The International Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility (ICCSR) Symposium
The International Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility (ICCSR) recently held an event on The Politics of Corporate Social Responsibility: What’s next? and celebrated the launch of a new publication.
The symposium brought together academics and practitioners to explore the politics of responsibility, accountability and justice, aiming to shape the future agenda for business and society scholarship.
A leading authority on sustainability governance, Professor Jeremy Moon from Copenhagen Business School in Denmark, gave the keynote address. Leading sustainable business consultant, Simon Graham of De Courcy Alexander Ltd in London provided a practitioner's perspective.
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has undergone significant change over the past century, influenced by historical, socio-economic, and political events. This includes the adoption of mandatory CSR and sustainability Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) regulations, reflecting changing societal expectations of industry responsibilities and accountabilities, which are inherently political.
Launch of the Concise Encyclopaedia of Corporate Social Responsibility
The event also marked the launch of a new publication, the Concise Encyclopedia of Corporate Social Responsibility, edited by ICCSR members Lee Matthews, Lara Bianchi, and Claire Ingram. This interdisciplinary work offers a comprehensive overview of CSR, incorporating concepts from influential voices and capturing the perspectives of the future.
Lee Matthews, one of the editors of Concise Encyclopedia of Corporate Social Responsibility, said:
We were proud to launch the book at this pivotal event along with contributors Professor Jeremy Moon, Professor Mihaela Kelemen, Dr Niamh O’Sullivan, Fabian Maier and Szu-Yu Chen.
We launched the book at this event as the political dimensions of CSR were a major theme within the encyclopedia with entries on ‘Business and Human Rights’, ‘Corporate Citizenship’, ‘Degrowth’, ‘Government and CSR’, ‘Modern Slavery’, ‘Politics and CSR’, ‘Taxation’ and ‘Workers’ Rights’. We valued the support of the acting ICCSR Director Professor Judy Muthuri who hosted the launch. The editors will be using the encyclopedia to support their teaching at the University of Nottingham on the ‘Business, Human Rights and Sustainable Development’ and ‘Business Ethics and Sustainability’ modules. We believe the encyclopedia is a state-of-the-art discussion on the evolution of and future for CSR and hope it will be useful to others teaching and interested in this area.
