I am currently the Dean of Nottingham University Business School. I also Chair the University's Modern Anti-Slavery Committee and Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF).
I joined the Business School in 2018 as a part-time Professor of Practice (Entrepreneurship & Innovation). Over the last 5 years I have also held other roles within the School including Director of Executive Education and Associate Dean (External Engagement).
I studied at the University of Nottingham in the 90's completing degrees in Civil Engineering (BEng), AI (MSc) and Airborne Mapping / Remote Sensing (PhD). I currently live in Nottingham.
Areas of ExpertiseAs well as my expertise in academia and professional training, I also have a wealth of practical entrepreneurial experience gained in the UK and New Zealand from starting and running my own innovative businesses and social enterprises. I have first-hand experience raising start-up funds ($multiM), growing effective, multi-disciplinary teams, and completing $multiM licensing deals with a FTSE100 plc. Prior to my employment in the Business School I was appointed as an Entrepreneur in Residence (under the UK's Small Business Charter) and actively supported a number of early-stage companies across the UK at both strategic and operational levels.
Although my degrees are in engineering and artificial intelligence, I have set-up / run start-up companies and social enterprises in a variety of sectors ranging from satellite navigation and geospatial engineering to professional CPD (enhancing employability skills for UK civil servants) and commercialising new food ingredients.
Over the last 5 years I have worked with undergraduates at all year groups across most Faculties as well as MSc, PhD, MBA and Executive MBA students. I have actively mentored a variety of student, staff and alumni start-up businesses through the University's Ingenuity Lab and, until 2022, ran regular training and evening classes about starting a business. I have also helped lead / support a variety of the University's pitching and student start-up activities.
