Hafez Abdo is an Associate Professor of Accounting and a Challenge Lead at the University of Nottingham Energy Institute. His research focuses on accounting and taxation of the extractive industries and accounting for climate change.
Hafez commenced his studies at the University of Aleppo/Syria as an undergraduate student in the year 1992, graduating in 1996 before studying for a Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting (1998), an M.Acc at the University of Dundee (2002), and a PhD from the University of Sheffield (2007). Prior to joining the University of Nottingham in January 2020, Hafez was a full Professor of Accounting at Sheffield Hallam University (2018-2020); before which he worked at the Nottingham Trent University as an Associate Professor of Accounting (2016 - 2018), Reader in Accounting (2014-2016), Senior lecturer in accounting (2005-2014), and assistant lecturer in accounting at the University of Sheffield (2002-2005).
Hafez is an associate editor for two accounting journals: Journal of Financial Reporting and Accounting (JFRA) and Journal of Applied Accounting Research (JAAR). He is a member of the Committee for Departments of Accounting and Finance (CDAF) of BAFA, a member of the UK Enforcement Board (UKED), a member of the UK Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (UK EITI), and an Examiner for the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT). Hafez is a visiting Professor at S. Toraighyrov Pavlodar State University in Kazakhstan.

Hafez research focuses on accounting and taxation of the extractive industries, with special focus on the oil and gas industry. He researched the role of IFRS 6 in harmonising accounting practices for the oil and gas industry; disclosures of decommissioning costs of the oil and gas industry, Accounting regulations of the extractive industries and taxation of the oil and gas industry. He is particularly interested in accounting for climate change.
Hafez research is published by leading accounting and energy journals: Accounting Forum, Australian Accounting Review, Journal of Financial Reporting and Accounting, British Tax Review, Energy Policy, Journal of Cleaner Production, Applied Energy Journal, Renewable Energy.
