Research Topic:Patient Safety in Home Care: Exploring the Impact of Human Resource Management Practices on the Care Quality and Patient Safety of Home Care in England
Research Details:Patient safety has been a global concern since published studies have shown that large number of patients are harmed during care procedure. In the United States, medical errors are the third leading cause of death in 2016, and in the United Kingdom, more than 2 million patient safety incidents that lead to harm of a patient under the care of the National Health Service (NHS) in 2017. One of the important organisational aspects of the healthcare system is human resource management (HRM) as the majority of the total budget funding goes to staff salaries and training costs. Additionally, previous research has demonstrated that HRM practices are strongly related to the quality of care and patient safety. Nevertheless, most studies have been conducted primarily in acute care hospitals and very little research focusing on the safety culture in home care (domiciliary care). The demand for home care services is expected to increase substantially in the future to keep pace with demographic pressures of ageing populations in the UK. Therefore, the aims of my research is to explore the safety issues in home care, the HRM practices associated with the safety issues in home care, and the potential for HRM practices to support improvement in quality and safety of home care in England.
