Research Topic:Urban narratives in data
Research Details:Big data analytics are not only rapidly gaining traction, but are also making an impact on research methods as well as business decisions and government policy. However, a challenge now exists in making the appropriate adjustments to research approaches so that big data analysis can deliver insight that is not only scientifically robust, but also addresses the critiques being levelled at it.
Therefore, during my PhD studies I aim to develop a methodological approach to augment analysis of big data, adding both 'contextualisation', and 'consilience' (Pentland et al., 2014) to traditional analytics processes. While this research is to be contextualised via case studies associated with smart cities (which will provide concrete application areas against which to explore this new approach), its insights are aimed at being scalable to other topics.
