Mecia Petersen - Full-time MBA
From classroom to boardroom: Nottingham University Business School MBA graduate Mecia Petersen uses hands-on learning to drive sustainable business.
Mecia Petersen was determined to make a difference in the world. After years of professional experience in South Africa, she decided to pursue an MBA at Nottingham University Business School to gain the skills and knowledge to become a sustainable business leader.
Mecia said:
"I chose Nottingham University Business School for its focus on sustainability, diverse international cohort, and real-world learning opportunities."
During her time at the Business School, Mecia participated in several hands-on learning experiences in which she explored different aspects of business and used her knowledge to solve real-world business challenges.
One such opportunity was the PRME Innovation Challenge, which saw Mecia lead a team of students to develop a sustainability solution for a real-world business problem.
The team worked with the Manitou Group North America HQ to develop an integrated marketing strategy that addressed various UN Sustainable Development Goals. Their solution was so successful that it won the challenge.
"Competing on an international stage against other highly regarded business schools and winning - as well as working with a global multi-national firm - was one of the highlights of my year,” Petersen explains. “I gained a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities of running a sustainable business."
Mecia also took part in the Nottingham University Business School’s Business Practice Week and networked with industry leaders and like-minded peers. She connected with senior Deloitte partners through the Deloitte Case Competition and worked on a management project with a successful marketing and PR firm in Nottingham. These relationships helped her to gain exposure to the world of sustainable business and build her professional network.
After graduating from the school, Petersen was offered a job as a Market Development & Communications Manager for the South African Table Grape Industry. In this role, she uses the skills and knowledge she gained at Nottingham to manage international marketing campaigns, execute stakeholder communications strategies, and engage with senior officials from embassies and consulates around the world.
Studying an MBA at Nottingham University Business School has provided me with an excellent foundation for my future in sustainable business leadership. From exposure to real-life business challenges to networking opportunities and life-long careers support, I now have the experience and contacts I need to make a difference in the world.
